Denise Cyzman

Executive Director

Denise Cyzman, Executive Director, leads the KAMU team to support its 50+ member organizations and ensures a strong fiscal foundation to achieve KAMU’s mission and organizational goals. With the Board of Directors, she guides the strategic direction, identifies and enhances strategic opportunities and partnerships, secures diversified funding, and advocates for policies to strengthen the primary care safety net system in Kansas. Denise also serves as the primary spokesperson for KAMU.

Since 1996, Denise has served in leadership positions for state and nationally based nonprofit health organizations, as well as state government. Denise has a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Nutrition and a Master of Science degree in Health Education from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.  She is a 2016 graduate of the Sunflower Foundation’s Advocacy Fellowship and the University of Kansas’ Community Health Center Executive Fellowship.


Kendra Poole

Chief Financial Officer/ Chief Operating Officer

Kendra Poole is Chief Financial Officer. She is responsible for the management of financial matters for KAMU and its affiliates. She develops and monitors the Association’s annual budget, including individual grant budgets. Kendra monitors grant contracts for fiscal and administrative compliance and works closely with all departments within KAMU to ensure proper oversight.

Kendra also serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Kansas Primary Care Connection (KPCC), a wholly owned subsidiary of KAMU.

Kendra brings more than 18 years of fund accounting experience, operations management, and grants management of nonprofit organizations. Prior to joining KAMU, she worked at the Kansas Health Care Association. Kendra has a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Friends University.

Katrina McGivern

Policy and Public Affairs Director

Katrina McGivern is the Policy and Public Affairs Director at KAMU. In this role, Katrina advocates to state and federal lawmakers to influence public policy in support of the Kansas health care safety net and the medically underserved populations. She also leads KAMU’s public relations and communication efforts.

With almost 20 years of experience, Katrina previously worked at the Kansas Foundation for Medical Care, Inc. and WIBW-TV. She currently serves on the Executive Committee and Board of Directors for Community Action, Inc. and is currently President of the Board of Directors for the Kansas Association of Health Care Communicators (KAHCC). Katrina is a graduate of Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas.

Sheldon Weisgrau

Director of the Health Reform Resource Project

Sheldon Weisgrau is the Director of the Health Reform Resource Project, a foundation-funded initiative to provide education and technical assistance in the implementation of health reform and the Affordable Care Act in Kansas.  Sheldon has more than 30 years of experience in health policy. He has worked effectively in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors to ensure the delivery of health care services in rural and underserved communities and to enhance the knowledge and engagement of health care consumers, providers, and policymakers.

Sheldon earned his undergraduate degree from Cornell University and a Master’s degree in health policy and management from the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health.

Susan Wood

Director of Clinical and Quality Programs

Susan Wood is Director of Clinical and Quality Programs. Susan provides technical assistance and guidance to members regarding clinical matters, including policy and procedures, quality improvement, and risk management.

Susan is a graduate of Washburn University’s School of Nursing and has been a Registered Nurse in Kansas for more than 25 years.  Susan has spent her career serving Kansans, providing inpatient care, occupational health and safety, Medicaid program management, and quality improvement management for Medicaid recipients.

Melody Martin

Director of Development and Training

Melody Martin, Director of Development and Training, is responsible for developing innovative programs and supporting members to efficiently and effectively engage in programs. Mel has more than 15 years experience providing operational support for government agencies, healthcare, and nonprofit organizations. She as a Bachelor of Arts in English from Emporia State University and also has completed the Breakthrough Series College Training through the Institute for Healthcare Improvement.

Terri Kennedy

Health Technology and Quality Improvement Specialist

Terri Kennedy, CAHIMS, is KAMU’s Health Technology and Quality Improvement Specialist. She provides project management for the Health Centered Controlled Network (HCCN), as well as provides data analyses, program coordination, and expertise on meaningful use.

Terri has 22 years of experience, with a diverse background that includes project management, Health IT, business, and technical expertise. Terri has a bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from Washburn University.

Debbie Berndsen

Cover Kansas Navigator Project Director

Debbie Berndsen is the Cover Kansas Navigator Project Director at KAMU. Debbie leads the efforts to recruit and train the certified navigators who assist consumers enrolling in the federal Health Insurance Marketplace. 

With more than 30 years of experience in all aspects of volunteer program development and management, Debbie has worked with a wide variety of community partners to create innovative ways to use volunteers to help address community needs. Organizations include Food Bank of Reno County, Reno County Health Department, Kansas State Fair, Hutchinson Public Schools, as well as the Reno County Sheriff’s Department.

Debbie guided the growth of the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) with 200 volunteers to a volunteer center with more than 1,000 volunteers of all ages serving throughout Hutchinson and Reno County.

Debbie is a graduate of Friends University in Wichita, Kansas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Resources Management.

DeLynne Walter

Grant Coordinator

DeLynne Walter is KAMU’s Grant Coordinator. She provides administrative support for grants and contracts, and manages the Quality Reporting System (QRS) and Member Management System. She also provides administrative support for KAMU’s Office Coordinator. DeLynne has 20 years of business office experience, which includes 13 years of service in the lending industry.  She has a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Bethany College.


Veronica Miranda

Cover Kansas Navigator Project Coordinator

Veronica Miranda is KAMU’s Cover Kansas  Navigator Project Coordinator. Veronica coordinates recruitment and training of the Cover Kansas Navigators, as well as provides outreach and enrollment assistance for individuals enrolling in the Health Insurance Marketplace. Veronica previously worked with KAMU as a Certified Navigator during the first and second Open Enrollment periods. Before working with KAMU, Veronica was a licensed Property and Casualty insurance agent in California.

Rita Brummer

Staff Accountant

Rita Brummer serves as the Staff Accountant. She assists the CFO and COO with managing the finances and daily operations. Rita specializes in safety net clinics, having served as the Finance Manager at Marian Clinic in Topeka for 11 years. In addition, she has 20 years of accounting experience that includes working at the Kansas Supreme Court Law Library. Rita has an Associate’s Degree from Fort Hays State University.

Susan Temaat

Cover Kansas Navigator Project Administrative Assistant

Susan Temaat is the Administrative Assistant for the Cover Kansas Navigator Project. She provides support to the Navigator Project Directors and Regional Coordinators. Her duties include maintaining up-to-date Navigator records, general correspondence, and other duties to help fulfill the scope of the project.

With more than 30 years in education, Susan brings 12 years’ experience of maintaining accurate, up-to-date and confidential student databases. Her most recent position was Technology Specialist/Student State Reporting Administrator for Hutchison Schools.

Susan has a Bachelor of Science in Education from Pittsburg State University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Missouri Southern State University.


Kari Parker

Executive Assistant

Kari Parker is the Executive Assistant. She provides administrative support to the Executive Director, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Financial Officer, as well as staff support for IT-related issues. Kari assists with event planning and implementation of Board of Director and Membership meetings, as well as legislative activities.
